Prof. Sharoni Shafir from Hebrew University’s Department of Entomology in the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment discusses Life in the Balance: The Honey Bee Perspective. Prof. Shafir is the Director of the B. Triwaks Bee Research Center and Head of the newly established Institute of Environmental Sciences. His scientific interests are in the areas of bee biology, nutritional ecology, perception, learning, and decision making, and the use of bees for pollination. Prof. Shafir has authored over 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Why should we be so interested in bees? Bees have been around for 100 million years. Honey bees, with thousands of species, have been around for 20 million years. The value of pollination is worth between 50-100 times more than honey. More importantly, every third bite of what we eat is dependent on bee pollination.
The slides from Prof. Shafir’s presentation are available below the webinar recording.
