On November 4, 2022, we lost one of our dearest and greatest friends, Alvin Cramer Segal z”l, whose passion and commitment to bettering lives in Montreal and Israel were unmatched.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was proud to honor Mr. Segal as an outstanding community leader and philanthropist, and on May 31, 2015, conferred upon him the highest honor the Hebrew University can bestow, an Honorary Doctorate. Along with this distinction, he was the recipient of the Scopus Award, which recognized his role as an exceptional business leader, a gifted entrepreneur and a generous supporter of the Canadian Jewish community and Israel.
Alvin leaves a wonderful legacy, visible in some of Montreal’s landmark institutions, including the Segal Cancer Center at the Jewish General Hospital, and the Segal Center for the Performing Arts. Both establishments reflect a personal passion and mission specific intent. This point of philanthropic purpose is also evident in his support of the Hebrew University.
When learning that high school students in Israel are often unfamiliar with basic Jewish sources and question their relationship to Jewish culture and values, Mr. Segal understood the urgent need to respond to this growing existential crisis. He was introduced to and became a leading patron of Revivim; the four-year Honors teacher-training program in Jewish Studies, in which students who earn their undergrad and graduate Arts degrees along with a teaching certification, join secular schools to re-introduce Israeli youth to their rich heritage, strengthening their Jewish-Israeli identity, and enabling their active participation in the future of the Jewish people.
Revivim Director Hedva Weiss said “Alvin Segal z”l’s generosity, driven by his commitment to Jewish values and to education, has enabled the training of over fifty ‘Alvin Segal Fellows’. These fellows, educated in the Revivim Program, are exposing Israeli youth to Jewish texts, culture, and heritage in secular public schools throughout Israel in creative and pluralistic ways, on a daily basis. These fellows will always serve as a meaningful reminder of Mr. Segal’s legacy”
President Asher Cohen noted that “The university community will always remember Alvin Segal z”l, Honoris Causa of the Hebrew University, as a man of vision and an inspiration to all who knew him. His commitment to the noble cause of Jewish education stands as a shining example for generations to come.”
Monette Malewski, CFHU National Chair, had a long-standing friendship with Alvin. “It was always a pleasure to be in his company. He made time for people and while together gave you his undivided attention and honest, sage, advice, and feedback. He will truly be missed.”
The Board of Directors, our Canadian Chapters, and Staff, will remember, with great admiration Mr. Alvin Segal. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Emmelle, his children Joel, Barbara and Renee, and their families. His memory will always be for a blessing.
